Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley Returns to Solve Another High-Stakes Mystery

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley Returns in a Thrilling Throwback

After 40 years, Eddie Murphy can effortlessly slip into his iconic role as Detective Axel Foley. It's the little details that make the latest “Beverly Hills Cop” movie a comforting throwback: classic Bob Seger and Pointer Sisters tunes, the signature Detroit Lions varsity jacket, and a strong commitment to on-duty absurdity.

Three decades since Axel's last adventure, “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” (★★★ out of four; rated R; premiering Wednesday on Netflix) delivers a confident fourth installment in the action-comedy franchise. While it's a modern release – streaming rather than in theaters – everything else feels delightfully old school.

Axel (Eddie Murphy) reunites with old friends John (John Ashton) and Billy (Judge Reinhold) in "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F."

Chaos and property destruction – accompanied by Harold Faltermeyer’s iconic synth-heavy “Axel F” theme – follow Foley from his beloved Detroit to Southern California. Familiar faces return, new characters add freshness to the series, and Axel, now exuding Big Dad Energy, solidifies himself as Murphy's most beloved cinematic character. (Sorry, Donkey.)
